Chronology and Lifespans in Genesis: A Forty Six Chapter Reality

Many evangelical OT scholars have attempted to reinterpret the lifespans in Genesis in a variety of non-literal ways. All these attempts fail to explain the numerical and chronological data in detail, and in their entirety. In this interview on Creation Today with Eric Hovind, I explain how the lifespans and chronology of Genesis are interwoven with both genealogy and narrative across 46 chapters of revelation. Interpreting the numbers as anything other than actual historical ages renders the sacred text incoherent. The chronology and lifespans embedded from Adam to Jacob can only be coherently integrated within a recent creation framework of human and earth history. Both are incompatible with old earth/humanity Genesis paradigms.

Jesus Christ and the Infallible Authority of Scripture (Part Two)

In part 2 of a 2 part series on Digging for Truth TV, I continue with a discussion of Jesus’ teachings on the authority and nature of Scripture. This episode emphasizes Jesus’ interactions with Genesis 1-9.

Jesus Christ and the Infallible Authority of Scripture (Part One)

In part 1 of a 2 part series on Digging for Truth TV, I discuss Jesus’ teachings on the authority and nature of Scripture.

The Transmission and Preservation of Scripture

In this presentation at Chafer Theological Seminary, I examine the doctrine of preservation, which is first and foremost a theological issue. Topics of discussion include: texts which speak of preservation, inspiration and preservation as corollaries, the numbers in Genesis 5 and 11, Masoretic “fundamentalism”, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and repetition v. resignification.

Genesis 11’s Genealogy and Old Testament Chronology

In this lecture at Chafer Theological Seminary’s Pastors’ Conference, I examine the numbers preserved in the genealogy of Genesis 11: 10-25 from the Masoretic Text, Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, and external witnesses. I present an argument that the longer post-Flood chronology deposited in both the Septuagint and Samaritan Pentateuch represent the original text of Scripture.

Dating Methuselah’s Death: Pre or Post Flood?

In this video, I examine the timing of Methuselah’s death in the Septuagint and demonstrate how the original Greek text has Methuselah dying prior to the Flood, not after.

Hermeneutics and Biblical Chronology

In the part 1 of a 3 part series on Digging for Truth, I discuss the hermeneutical foundations for properly interpreting the Genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11.

Abrahamic Chronology

In the part 2 of a 3 part series on Digging for Truth, I discuss the life of Abraham and the intricate way chronology is interwoven into his biography.

The authority of biblical chronology

In the part 3 of a 3 part series on Digging for Truth, I discuss the syntax of Genesis 5 and 11, the authority of biblical chronology, and the numerical differences in the three textual traditions.

Wild West Evangelical Hermeneutics

Archaeologist Bryan Windle interviews me on two episodes of Digging for Truth about my article series “Wild West Evangelical Hermeneutics.” We discuss the problems with using archaeological discoveries to interpret scripture, instead of the other way around.

Yes, Father Abraham Lived to the Age of 175

In this video, I demonstrate how the Abrahamic narratives and the broader context of Genesis render symbolic, honorific, and mystical interpretations of Abraham’s lifespan incoherent.

Who Changed the Bible in Genesis 5 and 11?

In this video, I do a deep dive into the numerical divergences between the Masoretic Text, Samaritan Pentateuch, and the Septuagint in Genesis 5 and 11. I conclude that the LXX preserves (most of) the original numbers in Genesis 5 and 11. Most of the MT’s chronology in Genesis 5 and 11 does not represent the original text, and is the result of a deliberate and systematic post–AD 70 corruption.

Genesis 5 and 11 in the Greek Septuagint Textual Tradition

in this interview, i discuss the numerical divergences between the Masoretic Text, the Samaritan Pentateuch, and the Septuagint in Genesis 5 and 11. Other subjects include: human and cosmic origins, the authority of Scripture, Kainan in Luke 3:36, Methuselah’s death in the LXX, the date of the Flood, the chronology of Abraham, and the patriarchal lifespans.

An Exegetical Examination of the Genealogies of Genesis 5 and 11

A careful examination of Genesis 5:3-31 and 11:10-25 reveals that the genealogies were written with chronological intent. While there could theoretically be genealogical gaps between some names, there are not chronological gaps because of the syntax and structure. Moreover, Non-literal interpretations (symbolic, mystical, honorific, mythological, etc.) reduce the sacred text to incoherent gibberish.

Genesis 5:32 – An Exegetical Examination

Advocates of non-chronological interpretations of the Genesis genealogies persistently draw on Genesis 5:32 and then utilize it as a hermeneutical grid to override the force of the syntax found in Genesis 5:3-31 and 11:10–25. In this video, i show why this constitutes a large-scale exegetical fallacy. Moreover, i demonstrate how these arguments frequently fail to carefully engage with the interpretive possibilities represented by the Hebrew text of Genesis 5:32, which differs substantially from the systematic syntactical pattern found throughout 5:3–31 and 11:10-25.

Chronology Controversy in Genesis 5 and 11

In this interview, i propose that the LXX preserves (most of) the original numbers in Genesis 5 and 11. The historical and theological implications of these differences are discussed, and the impact that the Enlightenment and Darwinism has had on biblical interpretation. Our conversation also addresses the preservation of the written word of God and the challenges of determining the most accurate representation of the original text. I outline the motivation, means, and opportunity for systematic changes to the chronology.

The Primeval Chronology of the Septuagint

In this video, I survey numerous reasons why most of the original numbers in Genesis 5 and 11 are preserved in the Greek Septuagint. I discuss why the begetting ages in the Hebrew Masoretic Text were systematically deflated in the 2nd century AD by the rabbinic authorities in control of the manuscripts which survived the destruction of Jerusalem.

Called from Ur or Haran? Abraham’s Migration in Genesis 11:26—12:5

The migration of Abram and his family from Ur to Haran and then onto Canaan in Genesis 11:26–12:5 is one of the most significant events in the history of redemption. Questions surrounding the chronology, the location of Abram’s call, Stephen’s speech in Acts 7, and text critical divergences in the MT, LXX, and SP have all been vigorously debated in the academic literature. In this presentation, I provide an overview of the issues involved and draw tentative conclusions for further research.

On the Originality of the Septuagint’s Numbers in Genesis 5 and 11

The focus of this presentation is on the numerical divergences between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint in Genesis 5 and 11. Corroborating external witnesses, internal and external evidence, text critical and LXX studies, and historical testimonies will be presented, along with arguments rebutting LXX inflation hypotheses.

On the Authenticity of Kainan (Luke 3:36; Genesis 11)

For centuries, scholars have grappled with the inclusion or exclusion of Kainan in Luke 3:36, Genesis 11:13b-14b, Genesis 10:22, 24 and I Chronicles 1:18, 24. Kainan’s authenticity directly impacts the chronology of Genesis 11:10-32 and its relationship to post-Flood history. In this video, I briefly survey Several lines of evidence supporting the inclusion of Kainan in the original Septuagint translation of Genesis, Luke 3:36, and even the original Hebrew text.
