Human History from Adam to Abraham: The Image of God and the Question of Ancient Human Fossils

Were Neanderthals fully human? For Christians committed to the authority of Genesis, that question is more than an academic exercise. It affects how we understand the image of God, biblical history, and humanity’s earliest ancestors.

This episode of the Digging for Truth podcast features an extended discussion between myself and Dr. Todd Wood (President, Core Academy of Science). Our conversation is centered around his academic paper, Human History from Adam to Abraham: Integrating Paleoanthropology with a Young-Age Creation Perspective, co-authored with Dr. Marcus R. Ross and Peter Brummel. The interview seeks to address one of the most difficult questions facing young-earth creationists: How should Christians understand Neanderthals, Homo erectus, and other ancient human remains while remaining faithful to Scripture?

Rather than attempting to answer every question surrounding earth and human origins, we intentionally narrow our focus to paleoanthropology—the study of ancient human fossils—and ask a more specific question: Which fossil remains should be considered fully human, bearing the image of God?

An engaging historical illustration and a recounting of the story behind the name “Neanderthal” serves as an instructive introduction. In the seventeenth century, the German hymn writer Joachim Neander composed one of Christianity’s best-known hymns, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty. Neander loved walking through a picturesque valley near Düsseldorf, and after his death the valley was renamed in his honor as the Neander Valley (Neandertal in German). During the nineteenth century limestone mining exposed caves containing unusual human bones. Following Darwin’s publication of On the Origin of Species, Professor William King identified these remains as belonging to what he believed was an evolutionary intermediate between apes and modern humans. Thus, the fossils became known as Neanderthals. The irony is striking. The name of a man who praised God as Creator has become permanently associated with one of the most famous pieces of evidence cited for human evolution.

Image as Foundational for Fossil Interpretation

Instead of beginning with anatomy, genetics, or evolutionary theory, the authors begin with Genesis itself. Before attempting to classify fossil remains, one should first answer a theological question: What does it mean to be created in the image of God? Genesis repeatedly describes plants and animals as reproducing “after their kinds.” Humanity, however, is introduced differently. God declares, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” This distinction immediately separates humanity from every other living creature.

Genesis presents humans not simply as another biological organism but as unique representatives of God within creation. Furthermore, Genesis 9:6 demonstrates that every individual human possesses this status, since the prohibition against murder rests upon the fact that each person is made in God’s image. As such, the image of God is not merely a characteristic of humanity as a collective group. Every individual human being bears that image.

The New Testament reinforces this understanding by presenting Jesus Christ as the perfect image of God. Although the Hebrew and Greek terminology differs somewhat, the earliest church fathers consistently connected Christ’s perfect image-bearing with humanity’s original creation in God’s image.

The Hebrew word translated “image” (צֶ֫לֶם) frequently refers elsewhere in the Old Testament to carved idols. Rather than being an unfortunate coincidence, Wood suggests this usage helps explain what Scripture means by humanity serving as God’s image. Ancient idols represented an invisible deity through a visible object. They also identified ownership or authority. Temples displayed idols to indicate which deity ruled there. Likewise, conquering kings often erected statues of themselves in distant territories as visible reminders of their sovereignty.

Applying this background to Genesis, Wood suggests that human beings function as God’s living representatives throughout creation. Humanity is God’s visible image placed within the created world, displaying His authority and exercising stewardship over creation on His behalf. This understanding shifts the emphasis away from asking merely what qualities humans possess toward asking what role humans fulfill.

Christians typically define the image of God primarily by listing characteristics unique to humans. Wood identifies several capacities commonly associated with the image of God:

  • rational thought
  • spirituality
  • moral responsibility
  • self-awareness
  • the capacity for relationships
  • creativity
  • the ability to know God

These characteristics are obviously important but may be better understood as the qualities that enable humans to function as God’s image rather than constituting the image itself. In other words, humans possess rationality and spirituality because these abilities equip them to represent God’s rule over creation. The image is therefore vocational as much as it is ontological. This interpretation fits well with recent scholarship in Hebrew studies and ancient Near Eastern literature, which increasingly emphasizes humanity’s royal and representative role within creation.

In Genesis 5:3, Adam fathers Seth “in his own likeness, after his image.” The passage demonstrates that the image is transmitted from one generation to another. This is especially significant because Adam immediately recognizes his own resemblance in his son. The image therefore includes genuine likeness.

Although God’s image cannot be reduced to physical appearance alone, Genesis 5 suggests that image-bearing involves an embodied reality and not just a purely abstract spiritual quality. The physical body matters because humans are not disembodied spirits representing God; they are living, physical representatives placed within creation.

An uncarved stone or stick is not considered an image. Only when shaped into recognizable form does it become an image representing someone else. Similarly, human beings are physical creatures created to represent God. This physical aspect becomes especially important later when attempting to identify ancient humans from skeletal remains. If image-bearing includes physical embodiment, then anatomical evidence cannot simply be ignored. Nevertheless, anatomy alone remains insufficient. Behavior must also be considered.

Throughout Scripture, idols are repeatedly mocked because they possess eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear, mouths but cannot speak. Human beings, by contrast, are living images. They think, communicate, worship, create, rule and form communities. These living activities distinguish humanity from mere carved representations.

Having established this biblical foundation, our discussion turns to the practical question of identifying image bearers in the fossil record. Upon meeting another living person, no Christian questions whether that individual bears God’s image. But when archaeologists uncover fossilized skeletons, the situation becomes much more difficult. Bones do not speak. They cannot explain their beliefs and cannot reveal whether they worshipped God, possessed language, or understood morality. Consequently, scientists and biblical scholars must infer humanity from archaeological evidence.

Rather than asking simply whether fossils anatomically resemble modern humans, Wood and his co-authors ask what kinds of evidence would reasonably indicate that ancient individuals functioned as image-bearers. Multiple independent lines of evidence must converge before confidently identifying fossil populations as fully human. No single characteristic should determine genuine humanity.

This leads into an analysis of the behavioral criteria that Wood and Ross use to distinguish image-bearing humans from non-human creatures, and then applying those criteria to Neanderthals, Homo erectus, and other controversial fossil groups while emphasizing both the strengths and limitations of the available archaeological evidence. In other words, how can archaeologists determine whether extinct populations represented by fossil remains were truly human?

Unlike living people, fossilized skeletons cannot demonstrate language, worship, morality, or relationships directly. Archaeologists must instead reconstruct behavior from the material evidence ancient peoples left behind. This task requires caution. The archaeological record is fragmentary, and many conclusions remain tentative. Nevertheless, patterns of behavior preserved in ancient sites can provide meaningful clues about whether a population exhibited characteristics expected of beings created in God’s image.

Wood and his co-authors therefore propose what they call concurrent criteria. Rather than relying on a single piece of evidence, they argue that several independent indicators should converge before confidently identifying an extinct population as human. This cumulative approach avoids simplistic conclusions based on one characteristic alone.

Sophisticated Tool Manufacture

The first criterion concerns the manufacture of sophisticated tools. Wood immediately distinguishes between simple tool use and advanced technological planning. Modern primates are capable of using tools and even modifying sticks or stones to accomplish particular tasks. Chimpanzees crack nuts with stones, fish for termites using sticks, and display behaviors that demonstrate considerable intelligence. For this reason, merely finding a sharpened stone is insufficient evidence of humanity.

Instead, Wood points to intentionally designed tools such as the classic Acheulean hand axe. Unlike a casually broken rock, a hand axe reflects deliberate planning. It is symmetrically shaped, worked carefully on both sides, and fashioned according to a preconceived design. Its maker envisioned the finished product before beginning the work. Such craftsmanship suggests abstract planning, foresight, and intentional design rather than opportunistic tool use. The distinction, therefore, lies not simply in whether tools exist but in whether they exhibit evidence of deliberate engineering and conceptual planning.

Artistic Creativity

The second indicator is artistic expression. Artistic behavior reveals something uniquely human because it often serves no immediate survival function. Archaeologists have uncovered pigments collected and processed by Neanderthals, suggesting intentional use of color. They have also discovered perforated shells and animal teeth that appear to have been strung together as beads. Microscopic wear patterns indicate these objects were actually worn and not accidentally damaged. Some beads even preserve traces of pigment, implying they were decorated before being worn. Such objects cannot easily be explained as purely functional tools. Instead, they demonstrate aesthetic expression, symbolism, and creativity. This behavior reflects one aspect of humanity’s role as image bearers. Since God is the Creator, humans likewise create—not merely because doing so improves survival but because creativity itself reflects God’s character.

Intentional Burial of the Dead

A third criterion involves purposeful burial. Many unquestionably human archaeological sites contain carefully prepared graves. Ancient peoples deliberately placed bodies within excavated pits, often positioned in orderly arrangements and accompanied by grave goods such as ornaments or tools. Such practices imply more than simple disposal of a corpse. They suggest ritual, respect for the deceased, memory, and perhaps beliefs concerning death itself. Wood acknowledges that burial alone cannot establish humanity beyond doubt, but when combined with other indicators it becomes powerful evidence of human behavior. The careful treatment of the dead demonstrates social relationships extending beyond mere biological survival.

Exploration and Geographic Expansion

Another important line of evidence is intentional exploration. Wood illustrates this point by discussing discoveries from the island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea. Even during periods of significantly lower sea levels, the island remained roughly fifty miles from the nearest mainland. Stone tools discovered there imply that ancient people deliberately crossed open water to reach the island. Unlike animals accidentally transported by storms, these individuals appear to have intentionally explored unknown territory. Such behavior requires planning, courage, navigation, and curiosity. This type of exploration reflects a level of purposeful activity consistent with humanity’s commission to exercise dominion over the earth.

Controlled Use of Fire

While fire itself is not uniquely human, sustained control over fire dramatically expands human capabilities. Archaeological hearths preserve evidence of repeated occupation, cooking, warmth, and social gathering. Wood describes excavated fire pits containing burned fish remains and processed plant material, indicating sophisticated food preparation. Cooking transforms diet, increases nutritional efficiency, and often requires planning and cooperation. The repeated maintenance of hearths also suggests stable communities rather than occasional opportunistic use of naturally occurring fires.

Care for the Wounded and Elderly

Perhaps the most moving criterion concerns care for injured individuals. Unlike many animals, humans routinely sacrifice time, energy, and resources to preserve individuals who cannot contribute fully to the group’s immediate survival. Such compassion reflects moral responsibility and social commitment. Wood regards this as one of the strongest indicators of humanity.

Neanderthals satisfy all six behavioral criteria proposed by Wood and his colleagues. Although their culture appears simpler than later Bronze Age civilizations, they consistently exhibit behaviors expected of genuine humans. Neanderthals manufactured sophisticated composite tools, sometimes using birch tar as an adhesive to attach stone points to wooden shafts. Producing tar requires controlled heating and considerable technical understanding. They produced decorative objects, gathered pigments, explored caves and remote environments while carefully burying their dead. Their remains appear on islands requiring deliberate travel. Most importantly, they cared for injured members of their communities. When all these lines of evidence are considered together, Neanderthals almost certainly represent fully human image-bearers. Their simpler material culture should not obscure their humanity.

Shanidar Cave

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence concerns Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan. Excavated beginning in the 1950s by Ralph Solecki, Shanidar has become one of the world’s most important Neanderthal sites. Several skeletons appear to have been intentionally buried. One individual was laid with a stone positioned beneath his head. Other burials occur in repeated layers, suggesting the cave functioned as a cemetery over an extended period. Although debates continue regarding some details—such as the famous “flower burial” hypothesis—the overall evidence strongly supports intentional burial practices.

The most remarkable discovery, however, was from Shanidar 1, where the individual found there had survived numerous devastating injuries. His skeleton indicates severe trauma to the skull. He was likely blind in one eye and appears to have been deaf in one ear. Most astonishingly, he had lost his forearm, yet the remaining bone had completely healed. Such healing demonstrates that he survived long after the injury occurred. This survival is difficult to explain without prolonged assistance from others because an individual missing an arm could not easily hunt or gather food independently. Others must have fed him, protected him, and cared for him throughout recovery. This level of compassion strongly suggests organized human community. Together, these discoveries present Neanderthals not as brutish cave dwellers but as compassionate communities capable of caring for vulnerable members.

Homo Erectus

The evidence becomes less clear when discussing Homo erectus. However, uncertainty should not be mistaken for evidence against humanity. The archaeological record is fragmentary at best and sweeping conclusions are unwarranted. Homo erectus is associated with sophisticated hand axes, which favor an interpretation of humanity. Yet other expected behaviors remain poorly documented. Intentional burials have not been convincingly demonstrated. Artistic expression is extremely limited and skeletal remains are comparatively rare and often occur in contexts where natural processes scattered the bones rather than preserving clear burial patterns. For example, the famous Nariokotome skeleton from Kenya appears to have decomposed in a stream, while the fossils from Dmanisi in the Republic of Georgia derive from catastrophic deposits rather than intentional burials. Thus, Homo erectus remains a difficult case, not because evidence disproves humanity, but because the available evidence remains too fragmentary to permit firm conclusions.

The Post-Flood World, the Stone Age, and Biblical Chronology

Instead of asking merely who Neanderthals were, Dr. Wood also asks when they lived in relation to Noah’s Flood, Genesis 5, 10, and 11, the Tower of Babel, Abraham’s world, and the emergence of Bronze Age civilizations.

The final portion of the interview moves beyond the question of who Neanderthals and other ancient peoples were to an even larger question: Where do they fit within biblical history? I believe this to be the most intriguing aspect of this research because it attempts to integrate archaeology, Genesis, and a young-earth creation framework into a coherent historical model.

Before turning to chronology, we should acknowledge the enormous complexity surrounding origins research. Discussions of Genesis 1–11 inevitably intersect with numerous scientific disciplines, including radiometric dating, Carbon-14 dating, geology, paleontology, genomics, climatology, and archaeology. The sheer volume of information can be overwhelming, and those defending a young-earth perspective often feel as though they are confronted with an endless barrage of objections.

Wood appreciates this observation and explains why the paper deliberately limits its scope. The authors do not attempt to answer every question about origins. Instead, they focus on a single issue: whether the archaeological and fossil record supports a clear transition from non-human creatures to image-bearing humans or whether the evidence can be understood within a biblical framework that distinguishes between humans and non-humans without requiring evolutionary ancestry.

Creation research has become increasingly collaborative. Unlike earlier generations, no individual scholar is expected to master every discipline. Researchers now specialize in areas such as radiometric dating, climate modeling, genomics, geology, and paleoanthropology, collectively contributing to a broader creation model. Wood sees this specialization as both necessary and encouraging, allowing scholars to investigate individual problems in greater depth while remaining connected to a larger interdisciplinary effort.

Most biblical archaeologists work within periods beginning around the time of the Exodus, the conquest, or the monarchy. Excavations at sites such as Shiloh focus primarily on the Bronze and Iron Ages. By contrast, paleoanthropologists investigate the much earlier Stone Age, examining populations commonly assigned conventional ages of hundreds of thousands or even millions of years.

Creationists cannot simply ignore this earlier record. Since Stone Age cultures truly existed, they must somehow fit into biblical history. Questions naturally arise:

  • Who were these people?
  • Were they descendants of Noah?
  • How do they relate to the populations Abraham encountered in Canaan?
  • Were Neanderthals and Homo erectus living before or after the Flood?

Many young-earth creationists have traditionally assumed that most ancient human fossils were buried during Noah’s Flood. However, he and his co-author sought to test that assumption more rigorously rather than accepting it uncritically.

One observation has proved especially significant.

While reading reports describing archaeological sites in Israel, Wood noticed that certain fossil-bearing deposits rested inside depressions carved into Cretaceous limestone. From the perspective of creation geology, Cretaceous limestone is generally interpreted as flood-deposited rock.

If fossil-bearing caves were carved into flood-deposited limestone, then the caves themselves must have formed after those rocks were deposited. Human burials placed within those caves therefore must also postdate the Flood. This insight prompted Wood to undertake a much larger investigation.

Wood assembled an extensive database of approximately one hundred Neanderthal sites and began examining the geological context of each one. The results were striking. Most Neanderthal remains were recovered from limestone caves or rock shelters—locations that appear to have formed after the deposition of the surrounding limestone. Moreover, many of these sites contain unmistakable evidence of intentional human activity with carefully excavated graves, repeated burials, prepared hearths, occupation surfaces, along with evidence of domestic activities. These archaeological features are incompatible with catastrophic flood deposition, and so much of the evidence strongly favors a post-Flood interpretation.

Another important line of evidence comes from stone tool production. Throughout Israel, archaeologists have identified numerous quarries where ancient peoples extracted flint from exposed bedrock. According to Wood, these stone sources are themselves flood-deposited formations. Ancient people quarried these rocks, removed large blocks, and fashioned them into hand axes and other implements. If the stone being quarried originated during the Flood, then the quarrying activity necessarily occurred afterward.

Having argued that many Stone Age populations lived after the Flood, Wood raises an even more provocative possibility. Perhaps the Stone Age should not primarily be viewed as a chronological era preceding civilization. Instead, it may represent a geographical and cultural variation among early post-Flood peoples. To illustrate the concept, Wood compares the modern world. Highly industrialized societies coexist with isolated tribal cultures using comparatively simple technologies. These differences reflect geography, resources, and cultural development as opposed to evolutionary stages.

Could something similar explain the archaeological record? Instead of a universal progression from stone tools to bronze and iron, perhaps some populations simply continued living relatively simple lives while others developed metallurgy and urban civilization. If true, then “Stone Age” may describe a way of life more than a universally sequential period. If Stone Age societies universally preceded Bronze Age cultures, excavations should consistently reveal Stone Age layers beneath Bronze and Iron Age settlements.

To investigate this, Wood and his colleagues began compiling a comprehensive database of Paleolithic sites throughout Southwest Asia, including the Levant, Anatolia, the Caucasus, Persia, Arabia, Egypt, and Sudan. They have documented more than 500 Paleolithic sites. Interestingly, only a relatively small number contain later Bronze or Iron Age occupation above earlier Stone Age layers. Most sites consist exclusively of Paleolithic remains. Wood does not regard this as conclusive proof, but he finds the pattern suggestive. Instead of demonstrating one continuous cultural progression, the archaeological record may reflect distinct communities living different lifestyles across the landscape.

The Patriarchal Lifespans

The biblical lifespans recorded in Genesis 5 and 11 radically reshape how early post-Flood history should be understood. Using conventional chronology, anthropologists compress roughly two million years of human evolution between the earliest Stone Age cultures and Abraham. Within Scripture, however, this same interval occupies only a comparatively brief span. Whether one follows the Masoretic Text or the longer Septuagint chronology, the entire post-Flood period leading to Abraham is measured in centuries rather than hundreds of thousands of years.

The extraordinary lifespans recorded in Genesis fundamentally change how technological development should be imagined. Conventionally, archaeology assumes that innovations accumulated slowly over countless generations. But Genesis presents a very different picture. Shem lived for five centuries after the Flood, and Noah lived 350 years into the post-Flood epoch. Ham and Japheth likely did the same. Consequently, just a single individual could have witnessed enormous cultural developments.

Rather than knowledge gradually accumulating through hundreds of anonymous generations, survivors of the Flood may have personally remembered pre-Flood technologies. Stone tools, pottery, copper working, and bronze metallurgy may not represent humanity gradually discovering technology for the first time. Instead, they may reflect the gradual recovery of knowledge after civilization had been destroyed. One might imagine an elderly survivor explaining to younger generations: “Before the Flood we had metal tools. We know they can be made. For now, however, we’ll use stone until we rediscover the necessary resources and techniques.” Technological simplicity reflects circumstance rather than intellectual inferiority.

In this model, early biblical history becomes far more interconnected than commonly assumed and living memory could extend across many centuries. Technological transitions might occur within a single lifetime. The apparent progression from Paleolithic to Neolithic to Chalcolithic and finally Bronze Age therefore represents post-Flood reconstruction rather than evolutionary advancement. If lifespans, environments, and post-Flood population dynamics differed dramatically from the modern world, assumptions about skeletal variation would likewise deserve reconsideration.

Overall Summary

In this podcast, Dr. wood presents a thoughtful and carefully argued attempt to integrate biblical theology, archaeology, and paleoanthropology within a young-earth creation framework. determining humanity requires more than anatomy; it requires recognizing behaviors consistent with the image of God. Using a cumulative set of archaeological criteria—including sophisticated tool manufacture, artistic creativity, intentional burial, exploration, controlled use of fire, and compassionate care for the injured—he concludes that Neanderthals exhibit compelling evidence of genuine humanity, while the case for Homo erectus remains less certain due to the fragmentary nature of the evidence.

Our conversation then moves beyond identification to chronology, proposing that many Stone Age populations lived after Noah’s Flood and that their archaeological remains are better understood within a biblical framework than as evidence for human evolution. By integrating archaeological observations with the genealogies and long patriarchal lifespans of Genesis 5 and 11, Wood suggests that the recovery of civilization after the Flood may explain much of the apparent technological progression traditionally interpreted as spanning hundreds of thousands or millions of years. Throughout the conversation, both Wood and I emphasize that these ideas are not presented as final conclusions but as a research agenda—one that encourages continued collaboration among biblical scholars, archaeologists, geologists, and paleoanthropologists seeking to understand humanity’s earliest history through the combined testimony of Scripture and the archaeological record.
